Basketball boom for girls in the Douglas Shire thanks to community support
FEMALES IN SPORT

BUSINESS FEATURE
Local basketball is growing in the Douglas Shire, and for Douglas Heat U14 players Piper Saxon and Gemma Cocks, the sport is a big part of their lives. With strong community support, including sponsorship from Ray White Port Douglas, more girls are hitting the court.
For Piper and Gemma, being part of a well-supported club means more than playing basketball, it’s about building confidence, teamwork, and a sense of belonging in the sporting community.
“It’s exciting to see more girls getting involved,” Gemma said.
“This is my third season. There were just a few of us then, now it's grown with so many more girls joining the club."
She credits the sport with helping her build friendships and develop new skills.
“The training, the games, and the support from my teammates have made a huge impact on me.”
Piper agreed: “I love how fast-paced and challenging the game is,” she said.
“Every match pushes me to improve, and playing with a supportive team makes it even better.”
Piper added: “Having full teams lets us challenge ourselves and improve as players. The more we grow, the better our opportunities.”
Female role models
For Piper, her biggest sports inspiration is Daisy Pearce, a former AFLW player turned coach.
“She’s a great role model for me, especially since I’ve also just started playing with the AFL Junior Crocs team,” she said.
Gemma looks up to Tina Charles, a US professional basketball player.
“I like her style and the way she commits herself on the court,” she said.
Both players hope to see even more girls join basketball and other sports.
“Basketball empowers young girls to stay active, connect with people of different ages, and support each other while learning new skills,” Gemma said.
“If you’re thinking about trying basketball, just go for it,” Piper said.
“It’s fun, keeps you active, and you meet amazing people.”
Gemma added: “You don’t have to be the best when you start. What matters is giving it a go, learning, and having fun.”
Community support driving growth
Ray White Port Douglas principal Mark Flinn understands the power of sport in shaping young athletes.
As a proud dad of two teens, including a daughter who plays basketball, he sees firsthand the impact of strong community support.
“At Ray White Port Douglas, we believe in the power of sport to inspire, unite, and uplift our community,” he said.
“Supporting local clubs isn’t just about fitness; it’s about creating opportunities, fostering inclusion, and empowering young girls to build confidence, resilience, and lifelong friendships.
“Sport is for everyone, and we’re proud to play a role in ensuring all kids have the chance to thrive.”
