Mahjong has become a beloved pastime among Douglas Shire seniors, and it all began with one woman’s passion for the game. For Diane Schulz, Mahjong is more than just a game, it’s a way to stay mentally sharp, socially connected, and actively engaged in the community.

When Diane moved from Edmonton to Julatten, she deeply missed playing. But with the support of U3A (University of the Third Age) Douglas Shire, she not only found fellow players but also helped create a thriving Mahjong community.

With more than 40 per cent of Douglas Shire’s permanent residents over the age of 50, the need for social connection and lifelong learning has never been greater.

U3A Douglas Shire, a not-for-profit organisation, is dedicated to helping people over 50 stay active, engaged, and connected through a wide range of activities, including Mahjong.

In April 2021, Diane approached U3A’s committee with the idea of teaching the game. Interest quickly grew, and within a month, the Mossman Library offered space for a local group, allowing even more people to get involved.

Now, Mahjong is a staple activity within U3A Douglas Shire, boasting 65 registered players, including a dedicated group of 40 regulars, plus seasonal players from across Australia and New Zealand.

The game is mentally stimulating and challenging, requiring concentration and skill, making it an ideal activity for seniors looking to keep their minds sharp while enjoying good company.

Mahjong isn’t the only way locals can stay engaged.

U3A Douglas Shire offers a diverse range of activities, including Tai Chi, Petanque, Trail Walking, Short Walks, Crafts, Gardening, Book Club, Writing Group, Pickleball, Table Tennis, Badminton, Volleyball, and Card Games.

Social events such as pizza on the beach, guest speakers, overnight trips, and excursions also provide wonderful opportunities for members to connect and explore new interests.

Part of an international organisation that began in France in 1973, U3A has over 60 groups in Queensland alone.

The Douglas Shire chapter plays a vital role in complementing the region’s active tourism industry by welcoming both long-term visitors and new residents into its vibrant community.

For those interested in joining, games are held at Palmers on Monday from 9.30am to 12.00pm. Advanced players meet on Tuesdays from 1.00pm to 4.00pm, and another session takes place at Mossman Library on Tuesday afternoons from 1.00pm to 4.00pm.

If you’d like to learn Mahjong and master terms like pung, kong, and chow, or explore any of the other fantastic activities on offer, visit the U3A Douglas Shire website to get involved.
