Price rises for the Jardine River Ferry, the key to tourists completing the epic journey to The Tip, have been defended on social media by one of the main tourist operations across the river, The Croc Tent Cape York.

In a post aimed at preparing tourists for the ferry cost, The Croc Tent says while “aware these prices have increased significantly over the last couple of years and are a big expense’’ there’s a need to explain what the permit cost covers other than the short trip across the Jardine River.

“This post is about informing you of an expense that you need to be organised for in advance as no money is taken at the ferry so booking online is essential. It’s not about debating costs, land rights or adding to the bridge debate,’’ the post states.

There is ability to book online at the ferry site and pay the fee on arrival at the ferry, which is closed until May 23 for maintenance.

“With your permit you can access and free camp at a number of beautiful locations, do the cool 4WD tracks around the Tip area and obviously hike up and get your picture at the Tip.’’

A single standard vehicle will cost travellers $160 for the return ferry trip while a car and caravan or trailer will set you back $250 for the trip over and back. Motorcycles are charged at $80.

In 2021, the ferry crossing permit cost $121 for a standard car. I bicycle cost $27.50 then and is now up to $40.
