Operation Smart Flow, Cooktown, snares 87 drivers

Officers from the Highway Patrol Unit, Cooktown, Mareeba and Cairns conducted Operation Smart Flow between February 24 and April 25.

Police issued 87 infringement notices in relation to offences including exceeding speed limits, failing to wear seatbelts, limbs protruding, unregistered vehicles, defective vehicles, unrestrained children, uninsured vehicles, fail to produce licence, using mobile phones, exceeding seating capacity, fail to wear helmets, and learner driving unaccompanied.

The fines issued exceeded $47,000.

Several notices to appear in the Cooktown Magistrates Court were issued for exceeding the legal limit for drink driving, driving under the influence of liquor high range, drug driving, fail to provide specimen of breath, unregistered and uninsured vehicles, serious assault, possess drugs, possess knife in public, enter dwelling and commit offence, trespassing, public nuisance, stealing, armed robbery, assault occasioning bodily harm.

Police are urging motorists to drive according to road conditions, show respect for other motorists on the road and be aware of the Fatal Five.

The Queensland Police Service is committed to reducing the number of lives lost on our roads.

Data shows that serious crashes can be significantly reduced when drivers recognise and avoid the ‘Fatal Five’ behaviours: speeding, drink and drug driving, not wearing seatbelts, fatigue and distraction.
