SPORTS DIGEST: Mauling at the tropical pink round
Around the Grounds
The Port Douglas Crocs pulled off a crushing 89-point victory against Cairns Saints on Saturday to help re-announce itself as a force in this year’s AFL Cairns competition.
The dominating 24-7 (151) to 9-8 (62) win was built on some hard running from the halfback line and some direct footy through the middle in front of a strong crowd at Port Douglas oval, which turned out in numbers for the Pink in the Tropics charity round.
Best players for the Crocs men were Kailem Baker, Harvey Moore, Tom Kluske, Ben Mcphee, Sam Fairclough and Thomas Cantwell, while Kye Chappell kicked five goals and Jacob Zboril four.
The Crocs women also broke through for their first win of the year on the pink-round day, which was dedicated to raising money for cancer survivors.
The women’s score was 4-7 (31) to Cairns Saints 1-4 (10).
Best players were Madeline Keeble, Caity Walsh, Indianna Paull, Jaimi Byrne, Mia Schreiber and Grace Lanigan.
Rugby league
The Mossman Sharks had a morale-boosting victory against a persistent Kangaroos outfit at home on Sunday, winning 24-20.
The Sharks fell behind early before a strong rally at the end of the first half, including some individual brilliance from fullback Rhys Murgha, who weaved his way through the Roos’ defence to score Mossman’s first two tries.
The second half was a tense struggle, with the Sharks eventually prevailing by four.

The Reef Raiders faced up to competition heavyweight JCU Mariners, eventually going down 28-40.
The Raiders started well enough, leading 9-0 after three successful penalty kicks.
But it got harder after that, with the Mariners’ wingers running riot to post several tries in succession.
Port Douglas fought on gallantly, but was outclassed in the end.
Late consolation tries went to Ameo Matabalei, Dereck Letcher, and Jean Valette.
