Treasure Hunt turns Port Douglas into playground of local discovery
COMMUNITY SPIRIT

Locals and visitors are encouraged to explore the streets of Port Douglas in a community-wide treasure hunt between 17 and 25 May.
Dubbed the “Golden Chest Treasure Hunt,” the initiative encourages participants to explore at least 10 local stores, each hiding a golden ribbon waiting to be found.
The community-wide event is the brainchild of Raine Ward, owner of Maker Artisan Gallery, who wanted to bring this year’s Port Douglas Carnivale ‘Tropical Treasures’ theme to life in a creative and engaging way.
“We love Carnivale and think everyone should be involved! Because this year’s theme is ‘Tropical Treasures’ we thought “why not host a treasure hunt?,” she said.
The initiative aims to spotlight the unique and often family-run businesses that line Port Douglas’s streets, particularly Macrossan Street, and to encourage both locals and tourists to discover or reconnect with shops they may have overlooked.
“I believe the local retail community is just as integral to our tourism as any other industry,” Raine said.
“Ultimately, I’m very passionate about keeping the street alive and creating more atmosphere and fun whenever we can.”
“It’s very special that we have a town filled with so many family run stores; something that's becoming quite rare nowadays.
“The rules state that each applicant must visit at least 10 stores and locate all 10 ribbons; so this is a great excuse to come into town for a few hours and see what Macrossan Street has to offer. “
The fun, family-friendly event is not only a creative way to spotlight local businesses but also offers the chance to win a Golden Chest filled with local goodies up to $600.
To begin the hunt, head to Maker Artisan Gallery and pick up an official entry form. As you discover each hidden gem, jot down the name of the store where you found it.
Once you've uncovered at least 10 treasures, return your completed form to Maker to go in the draw for the prize.
