Cake and connection as U3A Douglas turns five
EMPOWERING SENIORS
What began five years ago as a modest grassroots ambition has blossomed into U3A Douglas, an organisation built on the belief that for community members over 50, learning and connection should have no expiration date.
Today, that spark has evolved into a vibrant hub of community spirit, now boasting 201 active members.
At its core, the group is dedicated to supporting the mental and physical well-being of local seniors by offering a diverse range of creative and physical activities.
This welcoming environment does more than just keep members active; it combats social isolation for those aged 50 and over, fostering a space of inclusiveness.
The organisation officially marked its fifth anniversary at the General Meeting last Monday, April 20, at Palmers Clubhouse.
Members celebrated the milestone with cake and coffee, following a timely presentation by Dionne Power from Services Australia on the government’s “Support at Home Program”, aimed at improving in-house aged care services for older Australians.
New opportunities to move and groove
As the community continues to expand, so does its calendar of events.
Residents looking to improve their mobility and coordination can now join the Exercises for Over 55s program.
Held every third Wednesday from 1.00pm to 2.00pm at the Buff Hall in Mossman, this fun movement session is designed to be accessible for everyone, with exercises easily modified to suit individual needs.
For those who prefer a more musical tempo, the Ukulele Class has become a highlight of the weekly schedule.
Meeting every Thursday from 2.00pm to 3.00pm at the Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre, the group maintains an open-door policy where new faces are always welcome to just turn up and join the harmony.
Those interested in joining this thriving community or exploring the wide range of available interest groups can find the full list of classes and enrollment details by visiting the U3A Douglas website.
