The remote Cape York outpost of Weipa has been revealed by analysis compiled by LifeFlight Lotteries as Queensland’s luckiest location, while Port Douglas also gets a high rating for luck, landing in the top 10 towns based on the unique data collection

With luck on the minds of Australians looking for a little extra fortune in 2026, the new analysis reveals which Queensland communities have the most going their way, from lottery prizes and income to shorter commutes and relationship trends.

New analysis of Queensland locations by LifeFlight Lotteries, lotteries supporting the operations lifesaving work, has revealed the state's luckiest places by combining data on lottery prizes, marriage rates, divorce rates, average commuting times and average monthly income to create a luckiest score for each location.

The results suggest that luck is about more than simply winning big. While lottery prizes form part of the analysis, the ranking also considers factors that can influence everyday life, including relationships, commuting and income.

With a total score of 59.90, Weipa takes the number one position in the analysis. While its 1.74 marriages per 1,000 people is relatively modest, its 5.40% divorce rate is one of the lowest in the dataset.

The Far North Queensland community also recorded an average commuting time of just 8 minutes, among the shortest analysed, and an average monthly income of $10,568, the highest of all locations. Weipa recorded no lottery prizes in the dataset.

It really is a tale of two towns when compared against Port Douglas which came in at number 10 with a score of 44.84 and as the divorce capital of Queensland with more than 10 divorces per 1000 capita. It is the marriage capital too, with 81 in 1000 married.

Pushing Port’s luck up the charts was the average commute time of 15 minutes and the fact it is one of only six locations in the top 20 to have recorded a lotto winner. 

Toowoomba takes second place with a score of 57.62, standing out particularly for its lottery performance. The city recorded five lottery prizes, the highest number across all locations analysed. It also recorded a relatively low 9.40% divorce rate and an average commuting time of 18 minutes. Its $5,760 average monthly income and 1.51 marriages per 1,000 people were more moderate compared with the highest-performing locations, but its overall combination of results secured second place.

Moranbah rounds out the top three with a score of 57.23, with its particularly strong income and commuting figures helping set it apart. The community recorded an average monthly income of $10,204, the second-highest figure in the analysis, while residents had an average commute of just 10 minutes. Its 6.80% divorce rate was also among the lowest recorded. Moranbah recorded no lottery prizes and had 1.27 marriages per 1,000 people.

The results reveal that you don't need to live in one of Queensland's biggest cities to make the list of the state's luckiest places. Several smaller regional communities perform strongly across the index, with Julia Creek, Cloncurry and Chinchilla all featuring among the top 10.

In fact, Julia Creek, with a population of just 508, ranks fifth overall with a score of 46.83, while Cloncurry, home to around 2,700 people, takes sixth place with 46.76. Chinchilla follows in eighth with 46.50, despite having a population of just over 6,600.
