Women invited to learn and connect at Menopause Wellness Session

BUSINESS FEATURE
Menopause affects more than half the population, yet access to support and specialist guidance remains limited in remote regions, something the Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre hopes to change with a Menopause Wellness Information Event on February 28.
The session will offer a down-to-earth space for women to learn, connect and ask questions, with guest speakers sharing practical insights and lived experience, without the clinical jargon.
The session will be conversational and informal, set in a scenic location at Santi restaurant at Niramaya, with lunch included.
Chrissy Gilewicz from the Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre said the event was created in response to limited local opportunities for women to openly discuss important health topics.
“We want it to be a chance for women to better understand their choices during peri-menopause, menopause and beyond, while coming together in a friendly, social environment,” she said.
Chrissy said menopause had long been something many women felt unable to talk about, often without realising there were treatment and support options available.
“This event brings together a mix of traditional and alternative health perspectives, so women can leave feeling informed, supported and more confident to ask questions about their own menopause journey.”
The speaker panel includes GPs Dr Helen Hobson and Dr Jessica O’Connor from Port Village Medical Centre, both with a focus on women’s health, alongside registered nurse Edwina Kramer.
They are joined by pelvic floor physiotherapist Monica Madrid, naturopath Brooke Eli Cuman, and certified menopause lifestyle practitioner and weight loss coach Sarah Cutting, offering a well-rounded and practical approach to menopause care.
Keeping the conversation going
Chrissy hopes the session will be the beginning of an ongoing conversation rather than a one-off event.
“We would like guests to leave feeling more empowered to seek treatment options and ask questions to better inform themselves about their own health choices,” she said.
“We also want to overcome the misconception that menopause is a single event in time, as the impacts can be ongoing, for example, loss of bone density leading to fractures in old age.”
Attendees are encouraged to complete a short pre-event survey to help tailor discussions to the topics and questions most relevant to those attending: https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx...
