The Douglas Heat Basketball Club has big plans for 2026, including a new Wednesday night competition in Mossman and new representative teams in age groups from under-10s through to under-18s.

Although still in the formative stage, the ambitious plans are set to be ratified at the club’s Annual General Meeting on Thursday, February 5.

President Karlie Albury said she was hoping to build on the “amazing year” in 2025, where the club relocated to the Mossman sports centre and made other changes to help with “bringing back the community spirit”.

“We played local and Cairns games, we travelled to Cooktown and Atherton, and held a huge tournament to finish the year with clubs from Cooktown to Mission Beach all coming to play here,” Albury says.

The current competitions for juniors and adults will also remain in place in 2026.

“So overall lots of opportunities for everyone on any level to give it a go and join our basketball community.”

A sign-on day will be held on Saturday, February 14, term one competitions will start on the week of Monday, February 23, and the rep teams will also likely be training on Monday nights.

The new Wednesday night competition is expected to run throughout the middle of the year.
