Kuranda Range Road now open all night

The night closures of Kuranda Range Road have finished up for the rest of March.
The State Government Transport and Main Roads Department has announced this morning’s closure, which finished at 4am, will be the last one for the month, pending favourable weather and site conditions.
Day and night works will continue under single-lane traffic control without the need to close the entire road.
The current night-closure program was wound up earlier than scheduled due to works being completed quicker than was expected.
“We anticipate further night closure periods will be required for the scope of works at some sites throughout 2026,” TMR stated.
“Advance notice will be provided.”
In January TMR announced that the Kuranda Range Road would be closed on weeknights from the middle of February as work to fix the key arterial road following Cyclone Jasper damage in 2023/24 ramped up again.
The closures went from 9pm to 4am on Sunday to Thursday nights.
Traffic was let through once in each direction at midnight every closure night.
“This is to enable construction activities to be completed that are not possible using single-lane closures or long traffic holds,” TMR stated.
There have been four main worksites along the road that leads up the hill from Smithfield to Kuranda - one of only two access routes into Douglas Shire from the south - and further along the Kennedy Highway.
