Wonga Beach man escapes car engulfed by floodwaters
Shire weather
A 55-year-old Wonga Beach man has managed to escape his submerged car after it was engulfed by floodwaters on the Creb Track in the Upper Daintree on Monday.
At about 7pm on Tuesday, March 3, Mossman police were told that a car was underwater about 2.5km past Bairds Crossing, but they were not able to reach the vehicle after heavy rain made the roads impassable.
After further investigations, police found out the Wonga Beach man had been caught in floodwaters the previous day and had escaped uninjured.
The car will be recovered when flooding subsides.
Police are reminding all drivers to be mindful of weather and road conditions before travelling.
Residents and visitors should be prepared for heavy rainfall across the next week and police said our weather can change quickly and be unforgiving.
It doesn’t matter what car you drive, or how good you are at driving, as soon as you enter floodwater, your car can’t protect you, police said.
