Capping its high-speed vessel at just 25 passengers, the 25-minute blast across the water trades the rainforest shoreline for pristine sand cays and vibrant coral gardens.

While the scenery is world-class, the true heart of the trip lies on deck with crew members Kiyana and Lachy; two West Australian natives who followed a lifelong pull toward the ocean straight to Far North Queensland.

For Kiyana, working on the water was always the plan. After studying marine biology and communications while eco-guiding in Perth, she jumped at the chance to head north when a deckhand role opened up.

Lachy’s journey was equally ocean-bound, guiding 4WD and aquarium tours through the Pilbara, Shark Bay, and Ningaloo before making the move east with his partner.

"Having visitors see the place you live through fresh eyes means you never take it for granted," Lachy reflects.

"Seeing guests react to the same mountain we pass on the drive home or the creek we swim in every day makes living here even better."

Onboard, the pair’s guiding styles balance each other seamlessly. Lachy brings quick humor and warmth to the deck, keeping things light and approachable. Meanwhile, Kiyana channels a deep drive for marine science into hands-on guest experiences.

At "Turtles" - the tour's first snorkel site - Kiyana conducts regular health surveys for the Marine Park Authority’s Eye on the Reef program, frequently involving guests in real data collection.

"Because I survey it, I know where everything is hiding," Kiyana explains.

"I love seeing someone's face light up when they spot their first turtle, or showing kids Nemo."

Daily shifts come with constant surprises, from Kiyana swimming alongside a rare Flatback sea turtle to Lachy spotting a Great Northern Hammerhead in the blue.

On calm weather days, Lachy’s highlight is a rare drop at "The Wall," a 15-meter cascading coral drop-off.

"Floating out there, looking down as the light breaks through the deep blue, is just humbling," he says.

For both deckies, a successful trip isn't just about showing off the reef, it's about how people feel when they step back onto the beach.
