Ballers in the Douglas Shire are making their return to the courts for 2021.

Both the Douglas Netball Association (DNA) and the Port Douglas Heat Basketball Club are gearing up for their respective seasons and are encouraging new players to get involved.

DNA President, Sharon Beechey, said netball registrations are now open and all are welcome to join in the club’s preseason training and Come and Try sessions in the lead up to the 2021 season.

“We are currently running free strength and conditioning sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays for all players,” she said.

“From 2 March we start our Come and Try Netball games, where anyone can give it a go. Here we organise teams and grades and it also allows everyone to get back into the swing of things before the season kicks off on 20 April.”

Ms Beechey encouraged anyone interested to sign up now, with those who get in early and sign up before 9 February offered a payment plan for their fees.

“You can join as a team or as an individual and we will help you find a team.

“We have Net Set Go programs for ages five to 10, as well as junior and senior competitions.”

She added that eligible children can apply online for $150 vouchers to help pay for sports fees through the Queensland Government’s Fair Play program.

“We are also very much in need of volunteers and committee members to help run the season if anyone is interested please get in contact,” she said.

Over on the basketball courts, Mick Whalen, Port Douglas Basketball President, said the season will kick off next week.

Basketball is a game for all ages, teams and individuals are welcome,” he said.

“Aussie Hoops, our introductory program, a mix of fun and fundamentals, starts on Wednesday 10 February at 3:45pm.

“Our 12 and under competition also starts at 4:30pm on Wednesday 10 February, straight after Aussie hoops.”

The 12- to 15-year-old program will get underway on Monday 8 February at 4:30pm followed by the senior women’s competition at 6:30pm. While the senior men’s competition starts on Tuesday 9 February at 6:00pm.

“Come and try at the session that suits you or your kids,” Mr Whalen said.

“During the year we also hold a couple of representative tournaments.

“We are always on the lookout for volunteers and committee people, court masters and referees. If you are a parent or just interested, make contact.”

The club will also be hosting training and education opportunities for anyone wanting to take up refereeing or coaching.

“It’s a great way to earn some extra money,” Mr Whalen said.
