Celebrate International Women's Day with local Australian legends
Intenational Women's Day

Learn how Judy paved the way for equality for women as part of the ‘Original Nine’ and how Renee Cremen, despite many setbacks never gave up on her personal dream of becoming a medical doctor serving her Far North Queensland community .
Two local women who have broken the bias are joining Sheraton Grand Mirage Resort, Port Douglas, for an inspiring lunch on International Women’s Day, Tuesday 8th March 2022.
Tennis Legend, Judy Dalton AM, and Rural Doctor of the Year, Dr Renee Cremen, believe in a world that's diverse, equitable, and inclusive. A world where difference is valued and celebrated.
Judy Dalton AM made history alongside Billy Jean King over 50 years ago as members of the ‘Original Nine’. This trailblazing group of women broke away from the men's tour in 1970 in order to take a stand for equal pay, which paved the way for equality for women in sport, and beyond. Judy was also a singles finalist at Wimbledon in 1968 - where she fell to King in the title match. She won nine majors in her career, including eight in women's doubles and one in mixed.

“Sometimes you need someone, or in the case of the ‘Original Nine’ back in 1970, a group of women, to stand up for what’s right. We were pushed to take action after the US Open when the Director of the Pacific Southwest Championships in Los Angeles, Jack Kramer announced the men’s champion would receive $12,500 and the women’s winner $1,500."
"That was our chance to speak up and stand up for equal prize money. It was the right timing to make proper change but we had no idea at the time of the effect our actions would also have on future generations”, shared Judy Dalton AM."
Dr Renee Cremen grew up in Cairns and is now the Medical Superintendent at Babinda Hospital. She received the Rural Doctors Association of Australia's (RDAA) Rural Doctor of the Year Award in recognition of her exceptional commitment to her Far North Queensland community and her inspiring approach to teaching the next generation of doctors.
Renee has been providing dedicated service to the people of North Queensland since completing her Internship at Cairns Hospital in 2009.
“I get a lot of joy out of my work and enjoy teaching the medical students who come here on placement. Growing up in Cairns with a love for camping holidays in rural locations and an inner desire to help people probably meant I was destined to become a rural doctor”, said Dr Renee Cremen, Director of Medical Services Babinda MPHS and Yarrabah ED.
On Tuesday the 8th of March 2022, guests of Sheraton Grand Mirage Resort’s International Women’s Day lunch in Port Douglas will enter via the Lobby and enjoy a welcome drink on arrival in Lower Daintree Bar, before settling into the air-conditioned comfort of Feast Restaurant, overlooking sparkling blue lagoons and swaying palm trees, for a delicious and indulgent International buffet.
All proceeds from the day will be donated to local charity, ‘Pink In The Tropics’, a community based charity Breast Cancer Support Group supporting those recently diagnosed, undergoing treatment and survivors.
A number of valuable raffle and lucky door prizes will be up for grabs, including a one night stay at Sheraton Grand Mirage Resort Port Douglas, a private tennis coaching session with Judy Dalton, and much more.
