Return of next generation of Raiders
New beginning

The Raiders are recruiting the next generation and the rumbles are rising.
The Port Douglas Rugby Union has been running since 1899 and the passion and pride they have for their area and the game is clear to see.
Nathan ‘Fitzy’ Fitzgerald is one of those characters you only come across every now and then and his passion for rugby union and the need for a junior group of players is looking to break a near decade absence.
“Eight years – it’s been about that long,” Fitzgerald said.
“I coached when I was playing, and the juniors went on for about six and seven years before it tapered off.”
Fitzgerald along with his assistant coach and partner behind this idea, Leif Alvoen, saw enough talent in local junior rugby league ranks to think it would be a great idea to cross codes between seasons.
“None of these kids, except my son, have union experience. They play rugby league, but it’s been great to see them come and try out training and enjoy our game.”
“He (my son) has been playing in this competition for the past two years, but I wanted to see him, and other kids play for the club that I played for.
“It also acts as a great pathway for the juniors to step into the senior Raiders program.”
Having put together an Under 12’s squad that looks good to go they are looking to nominate further squads and age divisions including under 8’s, 10’s along with further interest in under 16’s and 18’s also.
“We are looking at a number of teams and looking for players of all ages to be a part of this.
“The feedback we are getting we are looking pretty good.”
The callout is for both male and female players to really build up the stocks of Raiders representing Port Douglas Rugby Union.
Training is at 5PM on Tuesdays at Mossman Showgrounds and Fitzgerald says all are welcome to come and become a Raider.
The Rugby Union Junior Season starts in the first week of October and is shaping up to be huge if this group of new, fresh, and young Raiders have anything to say about it.
