A mother and child can thank their lucky stars after a quick-thinking member of the public prevented a potential tragedy at an iconic local swimming hole.

The pair were swimming in a section of Mossman gorge a short time ago when rapidly rising waters saw them become trapped and isolated on rocks.

The timely hero quickly sourced a vine, which was used to assist with the rescue.

“In conjunction with the swift water rescue team the member of the public has helped perform the rescue,” Port Douglas Sergeant and Officer in Charge Damian Meadows told Newsport.

“The incident is a crucial reminder to be extremely careful around local swimming holes when it has been raining.

“Waters rapidly increase and strengthen before you know it, so again, please be very careful around swimming holes when we’re experiencing or have had heavy rain.”

The incident comes after Sgt Meadows confirmed a second, separate water rescue was also performed at the same location over the past 48 hours.

Meantime, Sgt Meadows has praised local party goers following a relatively quiet New Years eve in the Douglas Shire.

Sgt Meadows said only a small number of revellers were issued citations for bad behaviour on the night.
