Sheraton brings locals and visitors together this weekend
BUSINESS FEATURE

Sundowner drinks, Mediterranean bites, a rum masterclass, Italian feast and catchy tunes. Sheraton Grand Mirage Resort Port Douglas is set to come alive with locals and visitors celebrating the Aussie way of life this week.
The resort will be kicking off 2023 with a splash from Thursday 26 to Sunday 29 January with an abundance of exciting events on the calendar.
With Australia Day falling on a Thursday this year, the staff at Sheraton thought it would be the perfect moment to host a series of events for both locals and visitors.
Director of Marketing at the resort, Deb McDiarmid, said: “The public holiday is the perfect opportunity for many people to take off Friday and enjoy a staycation or a couple of nights out”.
Everyone welcome
With the upcoming series of events, the resort continues to put the focus on bringing locals and visitors together.
“Last year we started monthly events concentrating on getting locals and visitors together”, Ms McDiarmid explained.
“As many locals would know, since the re-opening of the borders, it has been difficult to get a room or even a seat in a good restaurant due to the huge numbers of tourists filling every resource in town.
“Now the flow of travellers has slowed down a little bit after the school holidays, we want to make sure everyone knows they are invited and very welcome.
“It is also the perfect opportunity to have a little staycation and to take up our ‘Locals Offer’ which provides buffet breakfast for two as an exclusive bonus.”
Signature experience returns
After renovations of the resort’s lagoon pool, the highly successful Sheraton Sunset Sessions will be returning during this special weekend.
“Our brand new large beach makes for the perfect gathering place where people can chill out to Ibiza beats as they sip cocktails and enjoy delicious Mediterranean food as the sun goes down,” Ms McDiarmid said.
“There’s nothing better than sharing a sunset and a couple of drinks with friends, is there? It’s a ritual in many parts of the world and the tropics does it better than anywhere else.
“The combination of being in nature, the sunset, a cool drink and music with a beat can create magical moments.”
A myriad of events
Another popular event makes its comeback as Mark Watkins of Mt Uncle Distillery will be teaching people more about the often overlooked spirit, rum.
“During the Rum Masterclass you get to learn the history of sugar farming and how rum is made,” Ms McDiarmid explained.
“At Sheraton we wanted a way for visitors to the region to understand the importance the sugar industry has played in establishing our town long before tourism arrived in the region.
“I have never been a rum drinker but after attending the masterclass last year and actually going on a Sugar Run with Mark, I now look forward to learning and tasting more about this ‘liquid gold’.”
As part of the resort’s commitment to raising awareness of our region’s sweet past, an Italian ‘Feast’ will be shining a light on the large population of 4th and 5th generation farmers and business owners with Italian heritage.
“Of course, the other reason we love to serve Italian food is that it’s a great cuisine to share. It brings people together and that’s what Sheraton is all about too”, Ms McDiarmid added.
The weekend would not be complete without the beautiful vocals of Port Douglas’ own Kiki Courtidis.
“I have not met anyone that doesn’t enjoy Kiki’s music, the locals love her. Besides that, the Daintree Bar drinks menu is so diverse there’s something for everyone.
“It’s a relaxing space that overlooks the resort pools and gardens and popular for a cocktail, or two, and tasting flights.”
