Welcome to our News in Brief, where you quickly catch up on some of the week’s stories.

Patients abused

A 51-year-old man was arrested after police were called to a hospital waiting room disturbance.

Police allege the man was transported to Cairns hospital and while waiting to see a doctor, became abusive to several patients.

The man was removed from the hospital, and allegedly picked up a pushbike and threw the bike into bushes.

He was located by police and charged with one count of public nuisance.

He was also charged with one count of trespass after he was allegedly linked to an incident on January 19, where he allegedly entered the yard of a Wright Close, Edmonton home.

The man was bailed and will appear in Cairns Magistrates Court on February 9.

Crash injuries

Police say several people are lucky to be alive after a traffic crash near Kowanyama last Sunday afternoon.

Initial investigations indicate that an Isuzu tip truck overtook another vehicle towing a boat at about 2.30pm on Topsy Road, with the truck then clipping the front of the tow vehicle causing it to roll several times, ejecting two people.

A 44-year-old Atherton man and a 16-year-old Forsayth boy were both flown to Cairns Hospital with fractured bones and lacerations.

The driver of the tip truck, a 37-year-old Redlynch man, was required to provide a roadside breath test which allegedly returned a positive result.

After further testing, Police allege that he returned a positive reading of 0.149 per cent BAC. He was charged with drink driving and is expected to appear in the Kowanyama Magistrates Court on February 16.

Coen supplies

Cook Shire Council has worked with Queensland Fire and Emergency Services, local businesses and wholesale suppliers to coordinate delivery of essential supplies to the regional land-locked community of Coen, the Shire’s second largest township and northern-most hub.

“Every year seasonal rains, flooding rivers and dangerous road conditions cause a large section of the Peninsular Development Road to close for weeks at a time, preventing many regional and remote communities across the Cape from obtaining essential supplies through traditional road transport routes,” Cook Shire Mayor Peter Scott said.

Daintree Air recently transported a total of five and a half tonnes of day-to-day provisions, including dry store grocery staples, fresh produce, mail and other essential supplies via six dedicated flights from Cairns to Coen.

Coordinated resupplies provide isolated individuals and communities with essential goods needed for survival. Under Queensland Disaster Management arrangements, the state government pays the additional transport costs to deliver them.
