Wangetti man’s snake bite; north flood warnings - plus more News in Brief
NEWS IN BRIEF

Welcome to Newsport’s News in Brief, where you can catch up with some of the week’s stories in a short read.
Snake bite
A man in his 40s was transported by ambulance from Wangetti to Cairns Hospital on Wednesday night with a suspected snake bite.
Queensland Ambulance Service confirmed the man had reported the bite to his ankle at his home, just after 10pm.
A CHHHS spokesman said a short time ago that the man remains in hospital in a stable condition, but the type of snake that bit him is unknown.
Flood advice
“If it’s flooded forget it” is the message Police are again putting out, after vehicles were caught in floods in the far north this week.
They are warning people not to attempt to drive through flood waters, with particular warning to not to cross flooded creeks, rivers or causeways, “regardless of the perceived capabilities of their vehicles.”
Police at stations around Cape York in particular are asking motorists to keep non-essential travel to a minimum. This request follows the isolation of several roads and towns in the region as a result of recent heavy rain.
The Archer River rose this week, resulting in the closure of the Peninsula Developmental Road.
Grievous harm
Police allege that in Lockhart River on January 25 around 5pm, two men known to each other became involved in an altercation whilst at a Kuyumu Street address.
They allege a 30-year-old Lockhart River man assaulted a 57-year-old local man and pushed him to the ground causing a large haematoma to the back of his head.
The 57-year-old was flown to Cairns for treatment. The 30-year-old was charged with one count of grievous bodily harm, and is scheduled to appear at the Lockhart Magistrates Court on February 14.
Trees felled
Motorists using the Captain Cook Highway between Douglas and Cairns might have noticed an area of trees cut down next to the Highway on the approach to the Palm Cove turnoff.
A reader reported that he had noticed a large section of trees removed between Buchan Street and Warren St, Palm Cove.
The vegetation removal is part of a $21.67 million Highway safety upgrade program between Florence Street, Cairns City, and Buchan Street.
A department of Transport and Main Roads spokesperson said the next stage of the works is the installation of “wide centre line treatment between Palm Cove Boulevard and Buchan Street.”
The spokesperson added, “in December 2022, we removed vegetation from the road reserve in preparation for the works. The vegetation removal was kept to a minimum and only carried out where necessary for safety.”
