Catching a big one with the whole family
FISHING CLUB

Founded 35 years ago by a few local families, the Mossman Boat & Fishing Club has now become an important pillar in the Douglas Shire community with over 120 members from tots to adults who all share their love for fishing.
Secretary at the club, Hayley Bender, started out as a junior member at the club and returned years later with her own family before joining the committee five years ago.
She told Newsport that the club is a small and family friendly fishing club that consists of men, women, and kids of all ages.
“We provide a positive and welcoming environment, ensuring that our monthly weigh-ins are an event for the whole family,” she said.
“Our club aims to create long-lasting relationships with our members and the local community to help promote, teach, guide, and influence the next generation of anglers in sustainable fishing practices.”
SOCIAL ACTIVITIES
Through community events and their own membership base, the club hopes to provide a hub for local fishers and families to participate in sustainable, social, recreational fishing activities.
“We aim to educate and promote the active conservation of our local fishery and engage with local councils and other community organisations to support and achieve this goal,” Ms Bender explained.
“Our members meet every 3-5 weeks for a social, friendly weekend of fishing, followed by a weigh-in and BBQ, with our comp running from February to November.
“We've got a lot of record holders from many different categories, including catch and release, heaviest fish categories, crab, spear fishing and overall angler awards.
“There are some big display boards at the club with record holders, for our current and prospective members to check out anytime.
“Beyond this, we also host fundraisers and community events including raffles, trivia nights and free family Fishing Fun Days which are definitely the most popular for the community.
“Everyone is welcome to become a member, absolutely, no fishing or boat experience needed. There are plenty of land-based fishing spots and we’re always happy to help new members out.
“We have a variety of different membership packages, including social membership, for those who want to be part of our club and attend events without partaking in the fishing.”
