The recent discussion around the legitimacy of whether a mysterious big actually genuinely exists in the Douglas Shire got us thinking – just what other mythical beings or creatures may or might call our giant backyard home?

Newsport recently revisited one of the more whacky and peculiar stories we’ve covered over the past 16 years and that is of a former local adventurer that, at the time claimed he had an encounter with a yowie type humanoid close to 10 years ago.

In October 2014 the ‘Nephilum hunter’ as he referred to himself back then told Newsport he had captured footage of a ‘Nephilum’ or yowie like creature deep within a cave in the surrounds of Port Douglas.

At the time the man said he was filming a documentary about the ‘Eye of Ra’.

The hunter said upon reviewing the footage he observed a mute and stationary figure that was seated with its arms folded over its own legs.

The documentary maker said he estimated the object would have reached three metres high when standing fully upright.

Upon leaving the cave the hunter said the creature appeared peaceful “as we walked out unharmed, so we know it wasn’t there to hurt us”.
