That learning how to play a musical instrument is not only about reading the notes on the page proves Lynda Irvine, who is passionate about giving everyone the opportunity to enjoy learning music.

With Lynda’s Music Studio, a music teaching business based in Mossman, Ms Irvine encourages her students to “give it a go” and get out of their comfort zone with life changing benefits.

“Learning how to play a musical instrument is an amazing package of experiences that contribute to our emotional and physical capacity to function in our everyday lives,” she explained.

“The experiences I create build student’s capacity to try new things. Everything is a little out of their comfort zone and very achievable, they only need some encouragement and support from someone who believes they are capable.

“The 'I will give that a go’ attitude that music encourages over time will change the way individuals manage uncomfortable and difficult situations.”

Changing lives

Hitting the right keys with her students, Ms Irvine was recognised for her work as a piano teacher with a Yamaha Break Out Award.

Seeing the benefits it brings to her student’s lives Ms Irvine is grateful to have taught music as a career over a long period of time.

“I involve my students in many varied music activities because you never know what opportunities are going to come available to them in their lifetime.

“The willingness and enjoyment of trying new experiences in public is a large part of developing confidence and self-esteem.

“With my studio students I organise busking opportunities at our local markets and they perform at events like the local Leukaemia Foundation fundraising functions.

“More advanced students also have opportunities to provide incidental music one Friday a month in the main bar at our local pub.

“Taking music performance out of the studio and into the community makes music making understandable in a whole of life environment.”
