The State Government has addressed calls to alleviate the growing congestion at a key Mossman intersection and will instead continue to focus on other more pressing works in the area.

“There are no current plans to upgrade the intersection of Captain Cook Highway (Front Street) and Johnstone Road,” a TMR spokesperson told Newsport.

“We will monitor congestion through this area for consideration of works in future funded programs.

“Our current priority in Mossman is to complete the culvert replacement at Parker Creek Crossing on Captain Cook Highway (Alchera Drive).

“We completed the first stage in mid-December 2022 and will carry out the second stage of works after the 2023 wet season.

“The second stage of works will include installation of a footpath on the crossing on the western side to improve pedestrian safety.”

The State reflected on recent works that have been carried out in the Mossman area.

A TMR spokeperson confirmed works carried out by Douglas Shire Council on the Captain Cook Highway (Front Street) includes:

• An improved pedestrian zebra crossing and refuge north of Grogan Street opposite Mossman High School.
• An improved pedestrian facility north of Johnston Rd opposite Mossman State School.
• An improved pedestrian zebra crossing on William Street just east of Front Street.
• An improved pedestrian zebra crossing and refuge opposite Lifeline and south of Junction Road/Mill Street.

Douglas Shire Council meanwhile, said it welcomes any feedback about the intersection.

“Council believes motorist safety is paramount and is open to feedback from the community about this intersection,” local Mayor Michael Kerr said.
