The controversial Daintree Ferry is again in the spotlight after confirmation the aging vessel will remain out of the water for longer than initially expected.

Due to be returned to the water on Saturday after being out of action since Monday for routine works and inspections a new problem with the ferry means it won’t return to the water, now, until Tuesday March 14.

A newly discovered problem with “excessive corrosion” on the ferry’s hull means it will be a long six days’ for those who expected it to return to the Daintree River in 48 hours’ time.

A Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) inspector confirmed the faulty hull needs to be fixed and an operating certificate issued before the ferry can legally get back in the water.

“Our team has immediately gone into action to re-organise the works schedule and allow the required contractors to get this fixed,” Douglas Shire mayor Michael Kerr explained.

“Safety, and ensuring we have a continuing service is paramount for the longevity of this crossing while Council works on the future solution.

“We are obligated to repair this critical public transport service and ensure a safe river crossing for the residents, tourists and economic sustainability of the region.

“We know extending the closure will inconvenience many people who are relying on a ferry service this weekend and appreciate their continued patience and support as we progress as quickly as possible with these essential repairs.”

The new setback is of little consolation and is set to add to the frustrations of locals, particularly those who live north of the Daintree River - who effectively are cut off from mainstream society by the ferry being out of action.
