Another magpie goose killed, signs up soon
MAGPIE GEESE

Signage to warn of wildlife crossing in the area will soon be erected on Port Douglas Road near where magpie geese have recently been killed trying to cross the road.
At least one more magpie goose has been reported dead at the side of the road since the first recent incident in which two birds were killed – a tragic accident which sparked widespread calls in the community for signage to be put up.
The issue, highlighted on social media and in Newsport, has created a heightened awareness about the magpie geese, especially about where they live, their breeding season, and where they regularly cross near the Barrier Street roundabout.
Many locals have taken pictures of magpie geese and their young near the side of the road and of motorists stopping to allow the birds to cross. But other birds have been hit by cars, and killed or seriously injured.
Newsport has been told the new signage for the section of Port Douglas Road, near the Barrier Street roundabout, is not far off being installed.
“The signs have been ordered and we will install them as soon as possible,” a Transport and Main Roads spokesperson said.
“Later this year, we will assess the effectiveness of the signs in consultation with Douglas Shire Council,” the spokesperson added.
“We encourage motorists to drive to conditions and be alert for magpie geese on Port Douglas Road.”
