Amidst the atmosphere of camaraderie, philanthropy, and the drive for positive change in the community, a remarkable opportunity awaits local groups and charities in the Douglas Shire.

The highly anticipated 2023 Salsa Sorensen Charity Golf Day is just around the corner, set to take place on Sunday, August 20th, at the picturesque Palmer Sea Reef.

This much-anticipated event presents a golden opportunity for local groups and charities in the Douglas Shire to secure grants ranging from $500 to $3000.

Once deemed eligible and selected, the fortunate recipients will be presented with their well-deserved grants on the Golf Day itself, in the presence of those who contributed to the fundraising efforts.

Primary objective

The dedicated committee, collaborates tirelessly to coordinate and promote the event, securing sponsorships and attracting enthusiastic participants.

Jess Uhlig, a committee member, highlights their main goal as raising funds for local groups and charities in the Douglas Shire. "This allows these organisations to obtain vital resources or facilities that improve their operational capacities," Ms Uhlig emphasised.

"For instance, the Douglas Shire Motocross Club utilised the funds to construct a shelter for their spectators, while the Wildlife Habitat, in partnership with the Tropical Animal Rehabilitation Centre, acquired a mobile ICU to provide critical care for injured animals."

In honour of Brian Sorensen

The Brian Sorensen Cup came into existence in 2009 as a heartfelt tribute to the late local icon, Brian Sorensen.

Following his passing, his devoted wife, Jenni, sought to establish a charity fundraising event in his honour. After five years of dedicated fundraising efforts, her desire to make an even greater impact on the community grew stronger.

She approached Rhys Bawden and Bill Conway, Directors of Salsa Bar & Grill, to collaborate on the establishment of a local charity organisation, now known as The Salsa Sorensen Association Incorporated.

In 2014, the Salsa Sorensen Association Inc. was formally incorporated as a Queensland Association, operating under the guidance of a board composed of local directors.

Local contributions

According to Ms Uhlig, the funds raised for the cause primarily come from hole sponsorships and fees paid by golf day participants.

“Additionally, there are often a number of sizable cash donations also provided by individual members of our community which is an absolute testament to the number of kind and generous communities that we have,” she said.

Ms Uhlig further outlined the criteria for organisations to be eligible for funding.

“It is essential that applicants are located within the Douglas Shire and can effectively demonstrate how their initiatives directly benefit the community,” she explained.

Improving the community

“With funding amounts between $500 and $3000 we would expect to support between six to eight groups,” Ms Uhlig said.

“We’re here to improve the community, we always raise in excess of $20,000 so there’s always a considerable amount of money that we have to give away.

“Submissions close on July 31st, successful applicants will be advised prior to the golf day and will be awarded their cheques during the Golf Day presentations so all the golfers and sponsors will see what their funds have contributed to.

“As well as the fundraising message, we’d also like to announce that the Golf Day team nominations are now open and with just 24 teams available, we advise teams to get in early.”
