Douglas Arts Base hooks visitors with 'Somethin' Fishy' exhibition
EXHIBITION

Douglas Arts Base (DAB) in Mossman is reeling in visitors with their latest exhibition, 'Somethin' Fishy,' which showcases a collection of quirky, unique, and cleverly created artworks.
From pottery to mosaics, watercolour to acrylic paintings, print-making with linocuts, mixed media, and felting, 'Somethin' Fishy' is the creative project of DAB artists Colin Price, Inger Rowe, and Mandy Ryan.
'Somethin' Fishy' takes advantage of the back wall of DAB's gallery, which has been transformed into a 'Feature Wall' to showcase the artwork of individual or group DAB artists.
Mandy Ryan, Gallery Manager at DAB, explained that DAB aims to have three exhibitions each year where all members are encouraged to participate.
“It provides opportunities for DAB members to display their artwork,” she said.
“A lot of what we do at DAB is about sharing our skills, knowledge and ideas with other members to inspire and encourage them to learn new or extend their existing art skills.
“By having a variety of artists and mediums on the Feature Wall, it is hoped that members will have the confidence to try new art techniques.”
Fish are fun
Fish have emerged as a fun, interesting, and relevant subject matter for the exhibition, resonating with the tropical setting of the Douglas Shire.
“Whether you like to watch them, catch them or eat them - they are entertaining, exciting and tasty,” Ms Ryan said.
“DAB artist Colin Price is a botanical painter and was painting some amazing fish and sea creatures and Mandy created her first pottery fish wall plaques.
“The idea grew and with Inger Rowe’s printmaking and painting skills, it was quickly decided that the trio would work on a collection of ‘fishy’ works for the Feature Wall.
“All of the styles and mediums chosen work well together and compliment each other to provide a unique and heart-warming display.”
Upcoming exhibitions
The ‘Somethin’ Fishy’ artworks will be on the Feature Wall until Sunday 23 July.
From late July to early September, Sam Matthews will have her artworks on DAB’s Feature Wall titled ‘My DAB Journey (so far ……)’.
DAB’s second exhibition for the year titled “The Space Within” will then run from 9 September to 7 October, then from mid-October to mid-November Ellen Terrell will have her artwork on the Feature Wall titled ‘Retrospective’.
