The highly generous and tight knit Douglas Shire community has been encouraged to rally behind and throw their arms around a resident who needs a helping following a devastating motorbike accident.

Just days ago Jorge Castro suffered serious spinal injuries following the incident at Oak Beach.

As such his friends have come together to create a GoFundMe page in a bid to assist him with future living expenses.

“Jorge is a remarkable and wonderful young man and has achieved so much since being in Australia,” his sponsor and owner of Grant St Kitchen Scott Ledgar said.

“We hope we as a community can help him get through this tough time.”

Born to bake

“Jorge was born to bake,” former work colleague Sandra Davies told Newsport.

“Shortly before COVID, Grant Street Bakery fans started noticing something a little different in their morning croissant.

“It was the extra dose of joy and passion that Jorge added to the batter.

“He was truly born to bake. Regulars swear they can taste the love in every bite.

“Ange and Luigi at Scomozzon’s Farm store north of Mossman have regulars who queue up for the Grant Street Bakery bread delivery since Jorge became a part of Scott’s team.

“If you’ve ever come through the Sheraton Daintree Lounge area after a sunrise on the beach and (have) heard the piano (playing) - that’s Jorge.

“He quietly spreads sunshine and that recurring theme of joy wherever he goes. We are lucky to have him as part of the fabric of our community within the Douglas Shire.

“It is beautiful to see people from all segments of our diverse Shire rally together to offer support and be a part of his recovery.

“Whether he walks or wheels back onto Grant Street, we can’t wait to welcome him back home.”

A third acquaintance of Jorge encouraged the Shire to also stand behind him.

The piano player

“I have taught Jorge piano from a beginner to the wonderful pianist he is now,” Lynda, his piano teacher revealed.

“He has loved learning piano and he is very passionate about his music and this comes across in his playing.

“He is the only person I know who drives around FNQ finding piano’s to play on his day off.

“He played all 23 pianos at Herberton Historical Village earlier this year all in the one day.

“This accident will change his life but he can still play piano, the music will always be there.”
