BREAKING: 30/10, 3.27PM

Douglas Shire Mayor Michael Kerr will not stand for re-election at next year's local government election.

Amidst growing speculation Cr Kerr cited "personal reasons" for not seeking re-election at next March's local elections.

It's understood Cr Kerr told a number of contacts 48 hours ago he had planned to walk away from the role at the completion of his current tenure.

"I believe that it is the right time for me to move on and pursue other opportunities in my commitment to working for the people of this Shire and to continue strengthening this region," Cr Kerr said in a statement through a personal email address just moments ago.

"I wish the next Mayor of the Douglas Shire all the very best and equally hope that they will have elected councillors who will fully support them on their journey as only through a united commitment and a cohesive council will we see the continued growth and success of the Douglas Shire in the years to come."

30/10 3.10PM There is mounting speculation Douglas Shire mayor Michael Kerr won’t seek re-election at next year’s local government elections.

Newsport understands Cr Kerr has already told a number of close contacts and Douglas Shire stakeholders, as late as just days ago he doesn’t have intentions to maintain his role beyond next March’s local elections.

While there is every chance Cr Kerr could have a change of mind, Newsport understands that as right now, the mayor will step aside when his tenure is finished.

It’s understood Cr Kerr, instead harbours ambitions for other roles, potentially at State level as Cook MP - a role currently held by Cynthia Lui, or even Cairns MP, a position currently filled by Michael Healy.

It’s understood Cr Kerr might publicly announce his position about his future movements at tomorrow's Douglas Shire Council ordinary meeting, or through a media release in the coming days.

In other election news, there is early, but unconfirmed speculation current Councillors Cr Lisa Scomazzon, Cr Abigail Noli and Cr Roy Zammataro will each look to go another term, while it remains unclear if Cr McKeown will do the same.

Election Day will be held on March 16, 2024.
