Local senior hero defies age with decades of volunteer service
SENIORS WRAP
Meet Wendy ‘Lulu’ Cowan, an 85-year-old resident of the Douglas Shire and the unsung hero of our community. With two decades of selfless volunteer work under her belt, she proves that age is merely a number.
Her dedication and tireless efforts were recently recognised with the esteemed Senior of the Year award.
For two decades, Ms Cowan has dedicated herself to the Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre, fundraising and aiding the community. Even at her age, Ms Cowan continues to be a driving force, investing her time in various community-focused activities, notably at the Port Douglas NicNak Shed.
She also played pivotal roles in the Clink Theater and the Save the Waterfront committee, orchestrating the transformation of a space between the Sugar Wharf and the tin shed into a beautiful parkland. Additionally, she spent several years welcoming cruise ships to Port Douglas.
Reflecting on her Senior Citizen of the Year recognition, Ms Cowan said she is not one to seek accolades. “The surprise at being chosen left me momentarily speechless during the award ceremony, even though people often tell me to shut my mouth because I’m so chatty,” she said.
Beyond her community dedication lies a captivating life story. From growing up on a South Australian cattle station to a career as an air hostess and a solo global journey in the fifties, Ms Cowan’s experiences include meeting her husband in Mexico and marrying amidst the tumultuous era of Pablo Escobar in Colombia.
Having learned a lot from her diverse life, Ms Cowan shares her wisdom with younger generations, telling them to follow their dreams, embrace adventure, and seize every opportunity to explore.
“It's about setting your mind to something and having the courage to pursue it, as nobody else will do it for you.”

Golden jubilee of love
In a heartwarming tale of enduring love, Warren and Helen, a local senior couple, have stood the test of time for an incredible 50 years.
Warren, currently residing at Kubirri Aged Care Centre, has been enjoying the consistent companionship of his devoted partner, Helen, who has been making frequent visits over the past 13 months.

Their 50-year long love story started with a chance meeting at a school fete. Recalling their adventures, Helen reminisced about their trips.“When we travelled out west and up the bush, Warren was in his element,” she says. “He had a lot of knowledge to share; this made the trips that much more interesting.”
Her advice for a happy relationship? “Relationships are like anything else; a lot of learning, accepting, forgiving, loving, respecting each other’s opinions, and our love has grown along with all these experiences.”
