Jack Coleman, a centenarian with deep roots in the Douglas Shire, has passed away in Sydney at the age of 100.

Surrounded by his loving family, Jack succumbed to a heart attack, leaving behind a legacy of joy and resilience.

A celebratory century

Last April, I had the privilege of sharing a drink with the ever-vibrant Jack Coleman at a Port Douglas pub. Nearing his 100th birthday, Coleman was eagerly anticipating the milestone with his characteristic zest for life.

His son Warren, a Port local, along with daughters Lynda, Janice, and Michelle, were organising a grand celebration in Sydney, where Jack resided. I felt compelled to share this remarkablemoment with our readers of Newsport.

Visiting Jack at his Stanmore home, I arrived with a bottle of single malt whiskey for us to enjoy. Jack insisted the bottle remain with his collection without me having a say in the matter.

A life well lived

Throughout his century-long journey, Jack witnessed the world evolve dramatically. From the early days of aviation to walking across the newly opened Sydney Harbour Bridge in 1932, his life was a tapestry of historic milestones. Jack's career as a fitter and turner, coupled with his personal experiences, offered a unique perspective on a bygone era.

What was the secret to his long life?

Jack attributed his longevity to a simple daily indulgence in beer and scotch, though his enduring spirit and love for his late wife, Noeline, played no small part. His humour and vitality remained undimmed, even as he reached the remarkable age of 100.

Congratulations poured In

Jack's centenary was celebrated far and wide, with messages from notables including Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Governor-General David Hurley. Yet, it was a letter from King Charles and Queen consort Camilla that brought him immense joy, showcasing his irrepressible wit and the value he placed on memorable moments. He did joke he was going to sell it on eBay but that didn’t happen.

Family Importance

Jack took immense pride in his family, cherishing the time spent with his nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. His appreciation for family gatherings was evident, highlighting the joy such occasions brought him. In his final moments, Jack's sense of humour shone through. During his first and only ambulance ride, he requested the siren be used all the way to the hospital, a wish that was graciously fulfilled, allowing him to savour every moment of the experience.

Vale Jack Coleman, an unforgettable man, and condolences to his wonderful family.

Jack's departure leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew him. His life, marked by joy, resilience, and an indomitable spirit, will be sorely missed.

As we bid farewell to Jack, we imagine him charming his way into the afterlife, perhaps with a single malt in hand, ready to regale St. Peter with tales from a century well-lived.
