The wonderful women of the Douglas Shire united last Friday, March 18, for International Women’s Day. Here’s how it was celebrated throughout our Shire.
This year's theme, as designated by the United Nations, was “Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress,” highlighting the crucial need for gender equality amidst global crises and a significant financing gap.
The Port Douglas Community Service Network Inc celebrated their 27th International Women’s Day with a vibrant lunch honouring the achievements of the remarkable women of Douglas Shire.
Moreover, the event served as a fundraiser for the Free Child and Family Counselling program provided by the Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre.
Emma Travers, Manager at the Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre, expressed, “We are seeing an increased demand for this service following the Cyclone Jasper weather events”.
“Last financial year, we were able to provide 141 free family counselling sessions to Douglas Shire families, thanks in part to funds raised at last year’s event.”
Saskia Turner, Principal at Bodies in Motions, served as the guest speaker during the lunch.
Meanwhile, the Sheraton Grand Mirage Resort Port Douglas celebrated International Women’s Day with an elegant High Tea.
General Manager Steve Molnar expressed the significance of such events in celebrating the diverse achievements of women and fostering community connection.
“Our International Women’s Day High Tea gives guests and visitors the opportunity to gather together and celebrate the diverse achievements of women while raising money for an important community cause – Mossman Friends of the Foundation,” he said.
The High Tea featured inspiring words from Deborah Kachel, a volunteer with Mossman Friends of the Foundation and 2022 Douglas Shire Citizen of the Year, as well as Executive Chef Belinda Tuckwell, whose career has spanned continents.
The event also included a raffle with proceeds donated to Friends of the Foundation and live music from accomplished harpist and singer, Loni Fitzpatrick.
