Growing calls to turn disused cane train line between Mossman and Port into multi purpose track for cyclists, runners, walkers
GREAT IDEA

In an era where residents are crying out for development and new projects to stimulate our region an online discussion has sparked calls for Council to investigate the genuine merits of funding a potential, exciting new attraction in the Shire.
A keen observer who recently watched a hapless cyclist being forced to ride their bike on the side of the road in extreme close proximity to cars also heading north led the individual to soon discuss the merits of constructing a dedicated two lane bike track between Port Douglas and Cairns – an idea that soon gained immediate traction and a swathe of online support.
The resident felt compelled to write a public message to Douglas Shire Council to further explore the idea.
“Dear Douglas Shire Council, please can we give serious consideration to developing the cane train tracks for use as a bicycle track,” the post started.
“We could attract tourism into the area with cycle races and provide a safe pathway for those who would love to cycle between Port and Mossman.
“This poor gentleman (pictured) was doing just that this morning facing very heavy traffic.”
Aside from cyclists such a track could potentially cater to runners, walkers and e-scooters’ users.
“Great idea, I would love riding to Mossman, but not on that road,” former DSC Mayoral candidate David Haratsis responded to the idea.
“Fantastic idea, need something positive like that to bring back the tourists,” another local said.
“A bike track between Mossman and Port Douglas is a must. A lot of people cycle on the road and it seems really dangerous. There have been fatal accidents in the past," another post said.
