Staying active isn’t just about movement, it’s about connection, laughter, and making the most of the beautiful surroundings. At Kubirri Aged Care Centre, residents are proving this through their increasingly popular walking group, which has become a highlight of their weekly routine.

Walking is one of the simplest yet most effective ways to improve both physical and mental wellbeing, and Kubirri residents are embracing it wholeheartedly.

Taking advantage of the unusually clear and sunny weather for this time of year, they have been stepping outside more often, enjoying the fresh air and the company of their fellow walkers.

Among the regular participants is Rosetta, who has found the activity not just beneficial for her health but also uplifting for her spirit.

“You know what I enjoy? I enjoy seeing us women walking together; how nice it is,” she said.

“The weather is so beautiful. It is very, very nice; you can see it in my face! Walking makes you feel better, more active, and more alert.”

Beyond the physical benefits, the walking group has become a social highlight, providing residents with the chance to connect and share moments of joy.

“We pick a topic to laugh about, it could be something we see while we are walking, and then we talk about it and have a good laugh,” Rosetta shared.

Kubirri’s Lifestyle Coordinator, Maria, has seen firsthand how the walking group has a positive impact on residents.

“We’ve been doing group walking for a while now, but it’s something we do more often during cooler weather and when it’s not the wet season,” she explained.

“Through my observation, I think it makes the residents happy, just by their laughing and smiling and talking.”

Maria believes the simple act of walking together helps build a strong sense of community.

“Having good company is what they enjoy most about it,” she said.

“Just looking at cars and other motor vehicles passing by, bicycles, people walking their dogs, the fresh air, and simply enjoying the outside serenity.”
