A post on a community Facebook page about dog poo on a log on spectacular Four Mile Beach has sparked community debate about being responsible and cleaning up after your pooch.

Regular Newsport post comment maker Leith Keegan made the post on the Port Douglas Notice Board last week with a picture of the offending poo perched on a small log just 20m from the doggy do-do bag dispenser.

“It's sad to see someone leave their dog's crap not just on Four Mile but on a log people would sit on... Maybe we should start posting videos of slack dog walkers who do this. It's right next to the entrance,’’ the post read.

But the first reaction to the post was that the concerned citizen was nothing more than a whinger.

Jo Westgate suggested the notice board was “such a whinge page at times”, having Mr Keegan fire back.

“Jo Westgate sit on a log in dog (poo) without realising it, then hop in your car go home and sit on the couch. Tell us all about how you wouldn't complain. Or better yet, sit on the bent palm tree and watch a toddler wander over and start eating it or playing in it.

“You are missing the point of the post. This isn't about me, I saw it before I sat. It's about trying to trigger the conscience, and sense of responsibility in dog walkers.

“It's also a public hygiene and preventative health issue, obviously. You shouldn't need to have that explained.’’

Other contributors questioned if it was dog poo and not dingo poo…. Or worse.

“What makes you think a dingo walked onto the beach to crap on a log near the carpark?’’ Mr Keegan questioned one poster.

“There were small dog footprints all around the log with thong prints. No bigger ones besides the thong prints. It’s a small dog sized dump.

“If you want to believe it was a dingo pup, feel free but I see no evidence of that. It wouldn’t have been alone if it was small enough to fit the prints. I’ll go with my own lying eyes, thanks.’’

Suggestions were also made there were not enough dog bag dispensers in the area, or the offending dog owner was perhaps looking to bag the poo up on the return trip but had forgotten.

Mr Keegan defended the provision of facilities to keep Four Mile dog poo free: “It is not in a bag. The (poo) bag dispenser is less than 20m from the little pile of (poo). This is laziness and disregard.’’

Dave Ohgh added: “There are dog bags and bins everywhere in the Shire.’’

But Bernadette Carr said she had not noticed any at the far end of Four Mile Beach where dogs are allowed.

Nat Terry, a professional gardener, had more to add.

“I would be a lot happier if people do the right thing wherever they walk their dog. Hit one of these with a line trimmer doing 36000rpm and let me tell you the results are not pretty.’’
