For many elderly and vulnerable residents in the Douglas Shire, Meals on Wheels is more than a food service, it’s a lifeline of nourishment and human connection.

To help keep this vital service running, the organisation is hosting a trivia night fundraiser on Wednesday, May 14, at the Central Hotel.

The event aims to raise essential funds to support the local program, which delivers not only nutritious meals but also meaningful moments of companionship to those who need it most.

“What we’re doing goes far beyond food,” said Rose Marie Santoressa, who coordinates the volunteer rosters.

“We’re often the only people some of our clients see all day. This trivia night helps us keep that support going.”

One of those clients is Jo, who happened to have her 91st birthday on the day of the delivery (and photo taken).

Jo, who can no longer cook due to shaky hands, says the service allows her to live independently.

“I get a main, a soup, a salad and a dessert,” she said. “They’re always good, and the soups are my favourite.”

But it’s the social connection that often means the most.

Volunteers like Gerry don’t just drop off meals, they offer a friendly face, a listening ear, and moments of joy that help ease the isolation many older people experience.

“One of my clients lost his wife just before Christmas,” Gerry shared. “Now he sees me more as a friend than a volunteer. For many, we’re the only visitors they get all week.”

Volunteers often go above and beyond, returning later if someone isn’t home, checking in on those with memory loss, and in some cases, even attending funerals.

“For just $39 a week, clients receive three meals, and the peace of mind that someone’s checking in,” Gerry said.

Organisers are calling on the community to come along, bring a team, and support a service that delivers far more than food.

The Trivia Night kicks off at 7pm on Wednesday, 14 May, at The Central Hotel in Port Douglas, with free entry for all.
