Photography fans will be pleased to know the annual Douglas Photographic Society exhibition has launched today and runs for a week.

Club president Tracey Jones says she is excited to stage the Tropical Destinations exhibition.

“We’ve got some amazing photos,” Jones says.

“We’ve got lots of entries, we’ve got about 130, maybe 140, photos going into the exhibition this year, so it’s gonna be a big show.”

This is the eighth year of the show, which is part of Port Douglas Carnivale, and the exhibition “keeps growing.”

“Our club is quite small at the moment, it ebbs and flows as to how many members we have, but almost every member is going to have a photo in there this year, which is amazing,” Jones says.

“It can be a little bit tricky sometimes to persuade members to print their work big and put it on display, especially the ones who are newer to photography.”

“But this year we’ve got lots of great photographers displaying lots of great work.”

The exhibition, which will be officially opened this evening (Monday, May 19) by Douglas Shire Mayor Lisa Scomazzon, celebrates the colour, character, and natural beauty of tropical life.

Tropical Destinations is on at Port Douglas Community Centre on Mowbray Street from May 19-24, with opening hours 10am-4pm.
