Local tourism staff invited to explore Mossman highlights e-bike tour

With peak season on the horizon, The Bike Shop & Hire is inviting frontline tourism staff to discover Mossman from a fresh perspective - offering a free opportunity to experience the shop’s Mossman Highlights e-bike tour firsthand.
The initiative, dubbed the ‘FOC Friday’, is designed specifically for those working in guest services and bookings, giving staff a genuine taste of the tour so they can pass on their enthusiasm to guests seeking unique day trip ideas.
Launched last year by owners Rod and Ange Johnson, the self-guided e-bike tour takes visitors off the beaten track - from Cooya Beach to Shannonvale, stopping at highlights like Mossman Gorge, a local chocolate farm, a fruit winery, and more.
“If they’ve actually done the tour themselves, it becomes something personal they can recommend,” Rod said.
“It answers that daily question: ‘What is there to do around here?’ with real excitement,” Ange added.
So far, it’s working. Feedback from early FOC participants has been glowing, with many describing the ride as family-friendly, adventurous, and a welcome break from the usual tourist trail.
While group sizes can go up to 20 people, most tours operate with fewer than 10, creating an intimate and low-impact experience.
Beyond the ride, this initiative is quietly powering an important local impact.
Rod and Ange designed the tour in response to the challenges facing the Mossman community, particularly after the closure of the town’s sugar mill.
Their goal was to support small businesses and inject new life into the local economy through sustainable tourism.
Tour guests regularly spend money at small businesses that might otherwise be overlooked.
“People grab a coffee in a local cafe, or buy a bottle of wine at the winery, it’s money flowing directly into the community,” Ange said.
Unlike conventional bus tours, the experience is active, immersive, and flexible, ideal for those wanting to truly explore the area’s natural beauty and charm at their own pace.
What makes the tour especially appealing is its flexibility. Guests can customise their route, choosing between options like golfing, cultural walks, winery visits, or simply more time at Mossman Gorge or Shannonvale swimming hole.
As the high season ramps up, Rod and Ange are encouraging local tourism workers - especially those in reservations, guest services, and booking desks - to come and try the tour for themselves.
“If you work in the industry, come along,” Rod said. “You’ll enjoy it, and your guests will thank you for recommending something unique and memorable.”
To take part in a FOC Friday tour, simply email [email protected] and provide proof of employment in tourism or hospitality. Spots are limited and offered on a first-come, first-served basis.
