Douglas Shire Council has issued cautionary advice ahead of dingo breeding season, urging people to think about walking in pairs for “peace of mind”.

Last year, the council placed traps in locations around Port Douglas as a pair of young dingoes raised concerns for users of Port Douglas Sports Complex, the animals taking residence around the skate park.

DEATH ROW DINGOES

On Christmas Day, 2024, an attack on a pet dog at the sport grounds was reported to the council. Reporting on the public concerns for safety and over the protection and preservation of dingoes in the Douglas Shire has generated widespread debate.

In the latest advice, the council says the public might notice dingoes becoming a little more active and protective of their territory.

“It’s a natural part of their behaviour this time of year,’’ the advice says.

“If you’re out walking, especially in the early morning or evening, consider taking a buddy along for peace of mind.’’
