Bold new ride rolls into Port Douglas with new owners
TRIKE TOURS

BUSINESS FEATURE
When Reece and Aviv Jones took over Tropical Trike Tours in April 2025, it wasn’t just another business move, it was the realisation of a lifelong dream on three wheels.
After more than ten years running a successful trucking company in New Zealand, the motor-loving couple were ready for a change of pace and a different kind of road ahead.
They had visited Port Douglas every year for over two decades, always knowing that one day they’d call this tropical paradise home.
Now, they’re sharing that dream with others, offering scenic tours on their stylish, comfortable trikes, with options for solo riders, couples, trios, or even groups on multiple trikes. It’s a ride guests won’t soon forget.
“We weren’t just looking for any venture,” said Reece, who has been immersed in the world of motorbikes and cars since childhood.
“I always wanted to do something with motorbikes and tours in Port Douglas, it’s been a dream since I was a kid.”
That dream gained momentum one night over drinks when a friend described his gig taking people on trike tours around Port Douglas as “getting paid to ride a dream”.
Inspired, the couple approached the previous owner with an offer, and Tropical Trike Tours shifted into high gear.
“We’ve built successful businesses from the ground up before,” Reece said.
“Our key to success has always been customer satisfaction and providing a service second to none.”
To stand out, they knew they needed more than just beautiful backdrops and comfortable rides.
The Gangsta
Enter: The Gangsta - a one-of-a-kind V8-powered trike, believed to be the only one in Australia legally compliant to operate as a tourist attraction.
“The sound, the size, it’s a beast,” Reece said.
They found the machine in Perth and rode it 5,000km across the country to Port Douglas.
“It’s something we’ll never forget, and something we’ll never put our backsides through again.”
That epic journey turned harrowing when bad fuel blew the engine in South Queensland. Now fully restored, The Gangsta is the crown jewel of their fleet.
Immersive tours
But the business isn’t just about flashy rides.
“We’re not just doing tours, we’re sharing the stories of Port Douglas,” Aviv explained. “We talk about the history, the culture, the secrets. It’s immersive.”
They offer four core tours: a laidback town loop, a scenic ride to Mowbray with crocodile spotting and a quirky letterbox trail, a journey to Mossman Gorge, and a coastal trip to Ellis Beach.
They also provide custom tours to destinations like Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures or Daintree Village, and can even arrange custom airport pick-ups and drop-offs for a memorable arrival or farewell.
Their rides are accessible, too, suitable for older passengers or those with mobility issues, including wheelchair users.
“We’ve had 85-year-old women asking to go faster,” Aviv laughed. “And people on the spectrum just light up. It’s for everyone.”
They’ve even become a hit with cruise ship guests looking for a high-impact, 2–3 hour experience from Cairns.
Their commitment to the community runs deep.
After a close friend was seriously injured during last year’s Carnivale, they began using their market stall to raise funds for Ozcare, where he now receives long-term care. “It’s about giving back,” Aviv said.
When she’s not on a trike, Aviv is leading Fit4Life Port Douglas, a functional fitness program helping over-50s regain strength, balance, and independence.
For both Reece and Aviv, it’s all about sharing the ride and giving others a reason to smile.
