Fresh term kicks off with unity, celebration, and student achievements in the spotlight

Local students kicked off the new term with National Reconciliation Week at the heart of the Douglas Shire, embracing Indigenous reconciliation along with other school and community milestones.
Wonga State School's busy term
Wonga State School has had an action-packed start, beginning with a successful Pig Races event at the Mossman Show. Year 6 students attended a school camp, and NAIDOC Week was celebrated with activities and performances.
The athletics season is now underway, with District Athletics on August 1 and TCN Track and Field events to follow. In PE, students are also focusing on road and bike safety through their Cycling Unit.
Looking ahead, Wonga is preparing for a STEM Fair on August 15, a Year 5 camp, Wonga Market Day on August 23, and a Kindy/Prep excursion to Wildlife Habitat on August 20. The term will wrap up with Band Camp in September and the Douglas Ball Games at Miallo.
Mossman State High School's Reconciliation Garden
Mossman State High School has secured a grant from the National Indigenous Australians Agency to create a Reconciliation Garden, designed to celebrate all cultures and foster connection. Local landscape gardener Rickie Burchill and Jabalbina contributed to the stunning design.
The garden will be officially opened on Monday, August 4, with local Elders, Traditional Owners, and community representatives planting native species as a symbol of unity.
Former exchange student returns to Mossman High after 27 Years
The school was delighted to welcome back former Japanese exchange student Toshinori Nakai, who returned after 27 years with his wife and two children. Toshinori spent a year at the school in 1998, forging lasting cross-cultural friendships.
During his visit, he toured the school, joined Mr. Wall’s Year 8 English class, shared origami and Japanese snacks with students and reconnected with past staff members.
Saint Augustine’s Pre Prep experience
Saint Augustine’s hosted its first-ever Pre Prep Experience on July 29, filled with fun activities like hoop games, tunnel ball, and Follow the Leader.
The event was a success and marks the start of a series of sessions designed to introduce families to the Saints community. The next Pre Prep Experience will be on August 13, featuring a Science lesson at 11.10 am.
These sessions are open to all families, community members, and children, whether or not they plan to attend Saint Augustine’s next year. Everyone is welcome to join and experience the joy of learning at Saints.
