If you are wondering where Wally is hanging out these days, the mysterious book character made several appearances at the Port Douglas State School cyclone shelter this morning.

At least five Wallys were spotted among the throng of students, teachers and parents at the school’s Book Week parade, but Odlaw, Wizard Whitebeard, Woof, Wenda and Wilma were harder to pick out.

You are bound to eventually find them if you keep looking long enough.

Schools across the district have been celebrating Book Week, with Miallo State School another one which went all out in the costume department.

There was also a host of other book characters at the popular PDSS event as students and teachers put in the hard work to make the day a memorable one.

The three houses from the Big Bad Wolf looked well constructed, while the various princesses, a stylish pirate teacher, a mini Steve Irwin with a plastic croc, a few dragons and a cute little kindy-sized Harry Potter all spring to mind.

And there was also an astronaut with an entire solar system rotating around his head.

PDSS principal Doug Barnes, aka Mr Twit from the Roald Dahl book The Twits, says the school has been hosting a parade for at least 10 years now, but the community spirit is still as strong as ever.

“It’s one of our highlights, our kids love to read, and we love encouraging kids to read,” Mr Barnes says.

“Our parents obviously get really involved in it.

"So it’s a great community engagement activity and it just reinforces everything we think is important, which is reading.”

If your school has any Book Week photos, email them to [email protected] with captions so they can appear in next week’s Newsport Book Week photo gallery.
