A $1.4m investment in sport-based programs for at-risk youth has been announced.

The Cooktown Police-Citizen’s Youth Club will benefit from a $1.4m investment in sport-based programs for at risk youth to reduce crime across Queensland, with Cook MP David Kempton delivering the news this week.

"This investment will give more young people the chance to stay on the right track by taking part in positive, structured sporting activities,’’ Mr Kempton said.

“Sport builds confidence, resilience and teamwork, qualities that help prevent youth crime and create stronger communities," he added.

"The PCYC is a cornerstone of the Cooktown community. Their programs provide a safe and welcoming space for young people to develop skills, find mentors and build positive connections that last a lifetime.

"By supporting PCYC Cooktown, we’re not only tackling youth crime but also investing in the future of our young people - helping them realise their potential and contribute to a safer, more vibrant community."

Cook Shire Mayor Robyn Holmes welcomes the opportunity to work with local police in delivering programs that engage youth in positive activities.

“Tackling youth crime starts with creating opportunities, and programs like Young People Shaping Futures give our young people positive pathways, keeping them connected to sport, culture and community instead of crime,” Mayor Holmes said.

“Supporting opportunities for police to build relationships and respect with our youth is an important step forward.

"Council thanks the State Government for its funding allocation, which will enhance youth programs, strengthen partnerships and deliver positive outcomes for our community.”

Sport and Racing Minister Tim Mander said the initiatives focused on building strong and safer communities.

“These programs also open doors to other sporting opportunities and community clubs, creating positive pathways for at-risk youth and encouraging greater participation in sport.”
