New School Savvy Hub offers year-round support for FNQ families
COMMUNITY SUPPORT
Douglas Shire families facing rising school costs may soon have access to stronger support, with Centacare FNQ set to open a new School Savvy Hub in Cairns next week, expanding its popular School Savvy FNQ program into a year-round community service.
The initiative, well known for helping families with low-cost uniforms and supplies at the start of each school year, will now offer ongoing workshops, wellbeing programs and guidance to help parents and students stay connected to education.
The School Savvy Hub, located at 66 Pease Street, Manoora, officially opened on Tuesday, November 25, with services available to families from across the region, including those who travel from the Douglas Shire.
Centacare FNQ Executive Director Anita Veivers said the expansion responds to a growing need for consistent educational support.
“School Savvy started 10 years ago to ensure every child could begin the school year on equal footing. Now, with the Hub, we’re providing that same care and connection all year round,” Ms Veivers said.
Parents and students will be able to attend workshops and information sessions, access guidance on navigating local services, receive case management and referrals, and participate in programs designed to promote school attendance, learning, and family wellbeing.
The Hub aligns with the recently announced 2026 campaign theme, “Our Village, Their Future”, highlighting the role of community in supporting children’s learning and wellbeing.
Families are also encouraged to donate new or pre-loved uniforms, shoes, backpacks, and school supplies at the Hub or any St Vincent de Paul store across the region in preparation for the 2026 school year.
