A plan to build a convention centre in the heart of Port Douglas is being discussed between the State Government and Douglas Shire Council.

Although only in its early stages, the proposal is being mooted in order to help encourage “diversification from the tourism market”, according to a report tabled in this week’s DSC meeting.

“Opportunity exists to nominate a convention centre land use in Port Douglas to strengthen the tourist economy and address extreme seasonality of the existing industry,” the report states.

“This kind of infrastructure would be regionally significant.”

The only indication in the report about where the centre may go is a mention of the “Port Douglas town centre”.

A new convention building would help “promote the development of the Port Douglas town centre precinct”, the report states.

The council will likely seek grant money from the Government to help pay for the centre.
