The theme for this year’s Port Douglas Carnivale Friday night Macrossan Street Parade has today been announced.

Festival organisers said this year’s parade, to be held on May 22 to herald in the start of Carnivale weekend, was themed “Ancient Wonders”.

The topic incorporated ideas including the “ancient Daintree rainforest”, the “wonders of the Great Barrier Reef” and the “diversity of the region”, they said.

Float entrants are invited to follow the theme to be in the running for four prize categories, with the overall Best Float winning $2000.

The best business float wins $1000, best community float $1000, and best eco-friendly float $500.

Douglas Shire Mayor Lisa Scomazzon said the parade highlighted the creativity and community spirit of the area.

“The Ancient Wonders theme allows our community to showcase our natural and cultural treasures and celebrate the rich stories that shape Tropical North Queensland,” she said.

“The parade is the perfect way to kick off the Carnivale weekend.

“It’s a true celebration of our tropical spirit.”

From 5pm there will be market stalls, street entertainers, carnival rides and amusements, with the parade starting at 6.30pm and the fireworks on at 8pm.

Savannah Sounds will also be on at Rex Smeal Park from 4pm to 10.30pm, with Sydney outfit Sneaky Sound System the headline act on the night.

Parade entries close on Friday, May 8.
