There is now an about 45 per cent chance of a cyclone hitting the coast between Port Douglas and Cairns on Friday or Saturday, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

The BOM’s updated forecast, released today, includes a new predicted track map for the tropical low currently sitting off the coast showing the expected landfall may be somewhere not too far north of Cairns.

If the system does turn into either Cyclone Narelle or Owen - with the name depending on whether a tropical low off the coast of WA also turns into a cyclone - it is expected to bring more damaging rain than winds.

Heavy rain is predicted to fall omorrow and Friday along the entire coast between Cooktown and Ingham, according to the bureau, with many areas expecting more than 100mm.
