The Daintree Ferry has been closed this morning after breaking free from moorings following heavy overnight flooding of the Daintree River.

"Overnight flooding has caused the Daintree Ferry to come loose from its moorings during intense rainfall from Tropical Low 29U," Douglas Shire Council states.

"A recovery mission will begin at first light when conditions are safe.

“Council and emergency crews will work to recover the vessel as soon as conditions allow.”

Queensland police have been informed of the situation.

“With extreme weather and major flooding already affecting the region, Douglas Shire Council is asking residents north of the river, as well as visitors, for patience as crews respond to a challenging and fast‑changing situation.”

Mayor Lisa Scomazzon said this was a challenging situation for the community and council.

“Our teams will be working to safely recover the ferry once conditions improve,” Mayor Scomazzon said.

“We ask for everyone’s patience and understanding as we continue to deal with a major flooding event that is affecting the entire region.”

A council official said more information would be provided as soon as it becomes available and once crews are able to safely assess the situation.

A major flood warning for the Daintree River was issued last night.

“Rapid river level rises are being observed at China Camp along the Bloomfield River,” the warning stated.

The Daintree River at Daintree Village was likely to exceed the major flood level of 9m overnight and into Friday.

“Further rises are possible with forecast rain,” the warning stated.

The Douglas Local Disaster Management Group on Wednesday afternoon moved to “lean forward” status in terms of preparation for a monsoonal weather event.

“The system may bring heavy rainfall, flash flooding and gales,” the advice stated.
