Daintree River croc boat and wharf swept away by floodwaters
Monsoon event
A Daintree River wharf has been ripped off the riverbanks during overnight flooding, sweeping away boats including a Solar Whisper crocodile tours vessel.
Solar Whisper owner David White said he was fortunate to escape the incident after only just stepping off the wharf since helping out a neighbour tie up his boat.
“I am lucky to be alive but very heartbreaking to have lost my boat,” Mr White posted online.
“We are closed… until further notice.
“Well this ended very badly guys.”
The incident comes as news breaks that the Daintree Ferry is closed this morning after breaking free from moorings following heavy overnight rain.
A Douglas Shire Council recovery mission is set to begin when conditions become safe.
A major flood warning for the Daintree River was issued by officials last night.
“Rapid river level rises are being observed at China Camp along the Bloomfield River,” the warning stated.
The Daintree River at Daintree Village was likely to exceed the major flood level of 9m overnight and into Friday.
“Further rises are possible with forecast rain,” the warning stated.
